Character AI alternative: what to compare before you switch in the Netherlands

Compare 12 Character.AI alternatives for Dutch adults: free allowances, memory tools, EUR or USD prices, age checks, retention and cancellation.

Most people in the Netherlands who look for a Character AI alternative have one practical problem in mind. It might be a waiting room at busy times, a content policy that does not fit your fiction, memory controls that feel too small, or doubt about whether the service will continue. Each of these points to a different replacement, and none of them is solved by picking the app with the lowest headline price.

There is also a dated reason to ask the question now. On 12 October 2026 Character Technologies, Inc. announced a voluntary Chapter 11 court-supervised sale process. The company says the platform keeps operating and that subscriptions and billing continue during the proceeding. It also says the platform would wind down if no viable bid emerges, and it expected the sale timetable to run into late November or early December 2026. That is a conditional risk, not a closure. When we checked on 2026-10-28, the service was still described as active.

Before you leave, check what you actually have. Character.AI's official FAQ promises unlimited free messages. It mentions a possible waiting room under high load and sets no numeric daily cap. The promise covers ordinary messaging, so it does not mean every premium model has an unlimited allowance. Free accounts get 15 memory pins and the Lite plan gets 30. These numbers count saved items and say nothing about how accurately a character remembers. Official USD prices are US$9.99 a month or US$94.99 a year for c.ai+, and Lite starts at US$4.99 a month, with regional variation. The Dutch App Store lists c.ai+ items at €9.99 and €99.99 and Lite items at €2.99 and €5.99, but prints no billing period next to them, so do not read those euro amounts as a confirmed monthly or yearly price.

Two policy points also affect the choice. Character.AI prohibits pornographic content for all users. Its Persona-based age assurance sets up an 18+ experience without lifting that rule, and a paid plan does not bypass the check. If you are leaving because of the content policy, the destination should publish its own adult rules. If you are leaving because of continuity, first decide what to keep, export or delete. The company says its privacy policy is unchanged and that export and deletion remain available. Our Character.AI review covers those account controls and the cancellation routes in more detail.

What makes an alternative worth switching to

Start with the unit behind every allowance. Take four headline numbers: Nomi's 50 messages a day, Secrets AI's 20 sent messages a day, Candy.ai's five messages in total, and GirlfriendGPT's illustrative 10 to 20 introductory messages across two or three characters. In a headline they look alike, but they are very different offers. A daily counter refills and a total sample does not. Keep the period attached to every number before you compare sizes.

Memory needs the same care, because each service describes it differently:

• Character.AI counts pins.
• SpicyChat publishes a context size per paid tier.
• Nomi describes Mind Maps, backstories and shared notes.
• Kupid AI's pricing comparison prints a window of the last 100 messages.
• Replika lets you read and remove individual saved facts.

These are product controls, not measured scores for long-term recall. What matters is which kind of control suits the way you write roleplay: a fixed set of notes, a longer rolling window, or facts you can edit one by one.

Age assurance and content rules come next. Character.AI and CHAI use Persona for age checks. SpicyChat uses a third-party video selfie, with possible ID fallback, in the regions it lists. Nomi, Candy.ai, GirlfriendGPT, Secrets AI and OurDream rely on a self-declared 18+ gate, sometimes reserving the right to ask for more. A stronger age check does not mean more explicit content is allowed. CHAI, for example, pairs Persona checks with a refusal of sexually explicit content.

Privacy and exit terms vary more than the marketing suggests:

• Nomi says plainly that it does not use end-to-end encryption. Its account deletion removes personal information within about 28 days, subject to exceptions.
• GirlfriendGPT and Kupid AI normally keep personal data for six years after account closure.
• Candy.ai and OurDream reserve the right to use user content for model training.

If your chats contain anything you would not want stored, these terms matter more than avatar styles.

Finally, check the Dutch practicalities.

• Language: Character.AI lists a Dutch interface. Replika and Talkie do not include Dutch in their iOS language lists, and Nomi's store listing shows English only. No listed service has a measured quality result for Dutch conversation.
• Payment: when we checked on 2026-10-28, none of the listed services confirmed iDEAL or SEPA at checkout. Card payment is the usual documented route, and some services add crypto, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
• Tax: for none of them is it confirmed whether a displayed price already includes 21% BTW.

If you are leaving because of one problem, start here

Use the table as a filter, not a ranking. Wanting fewer waiting rooms is a different need from wanting adult fiction, and a longer context window does nothing for a retention worry. Pick the row that matches why you are actually leaving, then read the documented limit in the last column before you sign up.

If continuity is the main concern, note that no other provider on this list has announced a sale process. That still does not make any of them permanent. A practical safeguard is to keep your important character descriptions, backstories and world notes in a plain text file you control. Character.AI says export remains available, but one service's export is not necessarily something another service can import. Nomi's shared notes, SpicyChat's personas and Replika's saved facts are all separate formats, so expect to paste or retype the important details.

If adult fiction is the reason, compare published rules rather than reputations. Nomi allows adult text but its wiki rules out nude companion photos. SpicyChat lets adults switch on explicit-language settings and blur controls but keeps illegal content banned. Candy.ai allows adult text and images within its blocked-content policy. A short planning note makes the switch easier. Write down four things: the feature you need, its published unit, its reset or billing period, and the exit route if the service stops fitting. Fifty daily messages and a five-message trial go on different lines of that note, and so do a weekly voice quota and a per-minute coin rate.

Twelve alternatives side by side

We checked all figures on 2026-10-28, except Candy.ai, Secrets AI and SpicyChat, which we rechecked on 2026-10-29. USD prices come from official pages and stay in USD because no Dutch checkout amount was confirmed. Candy.ai shows a dollar symbol without a confirmed currency code. The euro amounts for Janitor AI, Talkie and Replika are Dutch App Store listings, and SpicyChat states the same numeric amount in EUR as in USD. Kupid AI's euro figures sit next to crossed-out prices, and the official pages do not confirm the upfront amount behind them. Do not add 21% BTW on top of any of these figures. Budget with the total on the final payment screen.

The alternatives, each with its best fit

The order below follows our editorial criteria in this sequence: documented memory or context tools, a recurring free allowance, age assurance, published privacy and deletion terms, and then value. Affiliate status plays no part, and several services near the top have no partner arrangement with us. Displayed ratings compare documented product facts and do not imply tested dialogue quality. Every service is for adults, and only fictional adult characters are in scope.

Nomi has an indefinite free plan with 50 messages a day and no card required. Free messages are capped at 400 characters and paid messages at 800; these limit message length and do not measure memory. An official article lists the paid Standard plan at US$15.99 a month, US$39.99 for three months or US$99.99 a year. It covers up to 10 companions, 10 group chats and voice calls. Nomi describes its memory as persistent conversation memory, Mind Maps, backstories and shared notes, which suits long-running fictional roleplay. Adult text is allowed, but the wiki rules out nude companion photos. Nomi states it does not use end-to-end encryption, so keep personal details out of the fiction. To delete the account, go to Profile, Account Settings and Delete account, then verify by email and type DELETE. Personal information is removed within about 28 days, subject to exceptions. We did not find a Dutch App Store listing on 2026-10-28; the web version does not depend on store availability. Trustpilot showed 2.3 from 42 reviews on that date.

SpicyChat publishes its prices in euros. Since 2026-09-08, Get A Taste costs €5.95 a month or €60 a year, True Supporter €19.95 or €199.95, and I'm All In €29.95 or €299.95. The latest comparison table gives these tiers 4,000, 8,000 and 32,000 tokens of context. Older documentation still says 16K for the top tier, so treat the figure as a published capability rather than a recall result. Free users get core chat, the character library and three user personas, which is useful if you play several roles. Adults can turn on explicit-language and image settings, with blur controls. The age check is a third-party video selfie with possible ID fallback. The published list of mandatory regions covers the UK, France, Italy, Australia and selected US states. The Netherlands is not on it, but that is no promise of exemption. Card and one-time crypto payments are documented; iDEAL and SEPA are not confirmed. The statement descriptor is NDAI.CC. It is free to install, with Janitor+ listed at €14.99 a month or €99 a year as of 2026-10-28. The official pages do not confirm the final checkout total. The listing is rated 18+ and mentions in-app Age Assurance, but it does not name the provider or procedure. The interface is listed in English. The official pages do not confirm a numeric message or memory allowance from accessible primary documentation. The App Store privacy label is a developer self-report, and Apple says it does not verify these declarations. We could not review a separate privacy policy, so E2E, training and retention remain open questions. Trustpilot showed 2.5 from 35 reviews on 2026-10-28. The App Store names the operator as JanitorAI, INC of Claymont, Delaware.

LTD. of Singapore. The Dutch App Store lists a 1 Month item at €9.99 and a 1 Month Talkie+ Pro item at €29.99, checked 2026-10-28. We did not confirm the benefits behind each item or whether they match the web and Android versions. Free access comes with ads and in-app purchases and has no published numeric limit. Talkie's own FAQ says earlier parts of a conversation can be forgotten because of technical memory limits. Dutch is not among its listed interface languages. Its terms set a minimum age of 16 in the Netherlands, while Apple rates the app 18+. You cancel through the Apple or Google store you paid with. Google Play showed a 4.5 rating and more than 50 million downloads.

So you cannot assume a free allowance in the Netherlands, and no price was published when we checked on 2026-10-28. It is also unconfirmed whether the Persona check applies in every country. The storage model is the main trade-off: clearing site data can delete your chats, and there is no cross-device backup unless you save and load an export. Anyone who receives a shared conversation link can see its content. The text-plugin documentation says prompts and responses are not stored on the server and acknowledges adult themes when requested. Perchance hosts many different generators, so you cannot assume the same rules apply to all of them. These are store items, not one universal Pro price. You can read and remove saved facts one by one under Home, then the companion's name, then Memory. Removing the whole chat history means deleting the account. The privacy policy keeps messages and content for up to 60 days after the contract ends, and some financial or device records for at least 10 years. Deleting the account does not cancel billing. Dutch is not in the iOS language list. Italy's Garante fined Luka, Inc. €5 million on 2025-04-10 over historical issues, with an appeal noted.

Paid plans come with monthly allocations of 5,000 to 20,000 messages that do not roll over. The official pages do not confirm plan prices on 2026-10-28. Visa, Mastercard and Discover are shown, and CCBill is supported. Cancelling a subscription, requesting a refund and requesting data erasure are three separate routes. Ultra appears at €5.75 a week next to €24.99 and includes 75 photos, 25 videos, 35 voice minutes and 8 characters. The official pages do not confirm the upfront amount behind these weekly figures or which billing tab was selected, and a euro display does not prove a Dutch or iDEAL checkout. The pricing page says nothing renews, but the terms describe cancelling by contacting support, so check the offer you choose. Coins from subscriptions, trials and promotions expire after six months; packs you buy directly do not. The comparison prints a last-100-messages window. Data is normally kept for six years after closure. The operator is Servalot Ltd in Cyprus. Trustpilot showed 3.1 from 17 reviews on 2026-10-28.

Saving money: annual terms, introductory prices and metered extras

The largest documented savings come from annual billing, as long as you are confident you will keep using the service. The arithmetic below uses each provider's published amounts.

• Nomi: US$15.99 a month comes to US$191.88 over a year, against US$99.99 for the yearly plan, about US$8.33 a month. The three-month plan at US$39.99 works out to about US$13.33 a month.
• Janitor AI: on the Dutch App Store, 12 months at €14.99 total €179.88, against €99 for a year.
• SpicyChat: €71.40 a year on monthly Get A Taste versus €60 on annual, €239.40 versus €199.95 for True Supporter, and €359.40 versus €299.95 for I'm All In.
• Secrets AI: US$239.88 a year on monthly Premium versus US$109.99 annually.
• OurDream: US$239.88 a year on the monthly plan versus US$119.88 annually.

After the 12 October 2026 notice, think carefully before paying Character.AI for a year. The US$94.99 yearly c.ai+ price is lower than US$119.88 for 12 monthly payments, but the company itself says long-term operation depends on a viable sale. The Dutch App Store items at €9.99 and €99.99 carry no printed period, so confirm the term on the payment screen rather than assuming which is which.

Look twice at introductory prices:

• Candy.ai shows $9.99 for the first month, renewing at $13.99. A full first year on monthly billing therefore comes to $163.88, against $47.88 for the yearly plan.
• Secrets AI says a seasonal sale can discount the first term only.
• Kupid AI places its weekly figures next to crossed-out prices without confirming what is charged upfront.

In every case, compare the renewal amount, not the first charge.

Metered extras are how a cheap plan turns expensive:

• OurDream's 1,000 monthly coins cover about 20 voice-call minutes at 50 coins a minute, or 200 in-chat images at 5 coins each, or 10 five-second standard videos at 100.
• Secrets AI's 8,000 Premium Moments cover about 160 call minutes or 160 Premium images at 50 Moments each.
• Candy.ai's 100 standard tokens have no published per-action cost.
• You can only buy Nomi credits with an active subscription. They do not expire and are spent after daily allowances run out.

The Dutch App Store lists Replika Gem packs from €0.99; quantities and action costs still need separate checks (checked 2026-10-29). Your realistic monthly cost is the subscription plus whatever top-ups you buy at checkout, which you cannot fix in advance.

One SpicyChat rule is easy to miss. Subscriptions started before 2026-09-08 keep their old price only until the plan changes or lapses, and a downgrade also loses the old rate. Finally, do not add the general 21% BTW rate on top of a displayed amount. For none of these services was it confirmed whether BTW is already included, so plan around the figure on the final payment screen.

Safety, privacy and account exits

Age assurance ranges from a single checkbox to third-party verification:

• Character.AI uses Persona for age estimation, a selfie when needed and an ID fallback. The company says it does not receive identity images and that Persona deletes biometric data within seven days. That applies to the age check only and says nothing about how long chats are kept.
• CHAI also uses Persona.
• SpicyChat uses a third-party video selfie in its listed regions.
• Janitor AI's store listing mentions in-app Age Assurance without naming a provider.
• Nomi, Candy.ai, GirlfriendGPT, Secrets AI and OurDream rely on self-declaration, some with a stated right to ask for more.

Every service in this comparison requires adult users, and all fiction should stay with adult characters.

On privacy, Nomi is the only listed service that says outright it does not use end-to-end encryption. None of the others confirms that they do. Several keep data long after you leave:

• GirlfriendGPT and Kupid AI normally keep personal data for six years after closure.
• Candy.ai keeps account data up to three years after last activity and financial records for ten.
• Replika keeps messages up to 60 days and some records at least ten years.
• Nomi removes personal information within about 28 days, subject to exceptions.

Candy.ai and OurDream policies allow training on user content. That is a contractual permission, not proof that any specific chat was used. The safest habit is to leave your name, address, workplace and similar details out of roleplay entirely.

At most services, cancelling and deleting are separate steps:

• Character.AI subscriptions are cancelled under Profile, then Cancel My Subscription. Lite bought through the App Store or Google Play is cancelled in store settings, and web Lite through a support ticket under Payments and purchases.
• Character.AI account deletion on the web goes through Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account and Data, then Delete Account. On mobile it is Settings, then Remove Account. Deletion is permanent.
• Replika says deleting your account does not stop billing.
• OurDream says deletion cancels the subscription automatically.
• Nomi says uninstalling the app cancels nothing.

The statement descriptor tells you which charge on a Dutch bank statement belongs to which service: EverAI for Candy.ai, S LABS INC for Secrets AI and NDAI.CC for SpicyChat.

There is regulatory history as well. Italy's Garante fined Character Technologies €158,000 on 2026-07-03 and issued a 120-day corrective order, with an appeal permitted and its status unconfirmed. In 2025 the US FTC included Character.AI in an information-gathering study of companion chatbots, which is not a finding of wrongdoing.
