Is an AI girlfriend healthy? A practical guide for readers in the Netherlands

Spot signs of over-reliance on companion apps, set limits on time, money and data, and find Dutch help if a chat routine starts to hurt.

It depends on how the app fits around your sleep, work, friendships, money and privacy. What we can describe precisely is how these services are built: free allowances run out, paid tiers renew, memory has technical limits, and policies keep data after you leave.

For readers in the Netherlands, the practical details matter. Many providers publish prices in US dollars or show only a dollar sign. Dutch App Store listings show euro amounts, such as Janitor+ at €14.99 per month or €99 per year (checked 2026-10-28), but the official pages do not confirm the BTW breakdown at checkout. Nothing here is medical advice. An 18+ store rating, a polished avatar or a high app-store score tells you nothing about whether a service is good for your wellbeing. Character.AI, for example, has 4.1 stars on the Dutch App Store (checked 2026-10-28), yet its operator announced a court-supervised sale process on 2026-10-12. A well-rated app can still have an uncertain future.

How companion apps shape attention, money, memory and privacy

Start with what the product is. A companion character is software that generates replies. Its memory is a feature with limits, not a person's recollection. Talkie's FAQ says earlier parts of a conversation can be forgotten because of technical memory limits. SpicyChat publishes context sizes of 4,000, 8,000 and 32,000 tokens across its three paid tiers (checked 2026-10-28). Nomi advertises Mind Maps and shared notes but gives no numeric context window (checked 2026-10-28). If a character suddenly forgets something you told it, that is a technical limit, not a rejection. Keep that in mind before you put a lot of feeling into continuity.

Next, notice what the routine changes in your day. Warning signs include going to bed later than planned on a regular basis, cancelling plans with people to keep chatting, hiding how much you spend, or feeling you owe the character an explanation when you log off. Others are needing a session to calm down after most difficult moments, or finding that people you used to enjoy now feel like hard work by comparison. None of these is a diagnosis. Each one is a reason to adjust the habit, or to talk it over with someone you trust.

A simple test is how you feel afterwards. A session that leaves you relaxed is different from one that leaves you restless, preoccupied or eager to start again straight away. If replies often push you to keep going, buy more or come back sooner, you can end the conversation without arguing. A persuasive message from a fictional character does not oblige you to anything.

Free allowances vary a lot, and they can work as stopping points. Nomi's free plan allows 50 messages per day (checked 2026-10-28). Secrets AI allows 20 sent messages per day, and the counter resets 24 hours after the first message (checked 2026-10-29). Candy.ai offers 5 chat messages, 1 generated image and 1 created character in total, with no daily renewal stated (checked 2026-10-28). Venice allows 10 text prompts per day on its free plan (checked 2026-10-28). These are commercial limits, not health guidance. When you hit one, end the session there, and decide about paying the next day rather than mid-conversation.

Money needs its own boundary, because some services charge per action. Candy.ai shows a first month at $9.99 that renews at $13.99. We did not verify the ISO currency or the Dutch tax treatment of that price (checked 2026-10-28). OurDream charges 50 Dreamcoins per voice-call minute on top of its subscription (checked 2026-10-28). Secrets AI charges 50 Moments per minute of audio call (checked 2026-10-29). JOI AI lists 4 Neurons to read one romantic message (checked 2026-10-28). When spending is tied to intimate moments, it is easy to pay while you are emotional. Set a monthly ceiling in advance. Look on your bank statement for billing names such as EverAI (Candy.ai), NDAI.CC (SpicyChat), S LABS INC (Secrets AI) or joi.com (JOI AI). On euro pricing, SpicyChat lists €5.95, €19.95 and €29.95 per month for its tiers (checked 2026-10-28), but it is not confirmed whether BTW is included.

A warm conversation cannot protect your privacy for you. Nomi says it does not use end-to-end encryption, and its policy describes deleting personal information within about 28 days of account deletion, with exceptions (checked 2026-10-28). Candy.ai's policy covers using chats for AI training and keeping account data for up to 3 years after last activity (checked 2026-10-28). HeraHaven's terms allow training on user content unless you opt out by email. GirlfriendGPT and Kupid AI normally keep personal data for 6 years after account closure (checked 2026-10-28). Use invented backgrounds. Leave out your address, employer, health details and other people's private messages. An app that replies perceptively is still not a confidential counsellor.

People tend to overlook continuity. A character exists only as long as the company keeps running it on the same terms. Character.AI's operator says the platform may wind down if no viable bid comes out of its sale process, and that subscriptions keep billing during the proceeding (checked 2026-10-28). SpicyChat changed its prices on 2026-09-08, and older subscribers keep their previous rate only until they change plan or let it lapse. If the idea of a service closing would feel like losing a relationship, that tells you how central the app has become.

Work out how to stop before you need to. Uninstalling the app does not cancel billing at Nomi or Replika. At Nomi, go to Profile, Subscription, Manage Subscription, Cancel Subscription. Replika lets you remove individual saved memories, but you have to delete the account to delete the whole chat history. Nastia makes you cancel your membership before you can delete the account. Deleting an OurDream account cancels the subscription automatically, and you lose any remaining coins without a refund. Decide whether you want a short break, an end to renewal or full removal, and act through the billing channel you actually used.

Finally, involve other people. You do not need to explain the storyline to anyone. Asking a friend to join you for an evening out, or to help you go through your subscriptions, is enough. If low mood, anxiety or loneliness persists, contact your huisarts (GP). When you compare services, privacy, age checks and value matter as much as dialogue. A boundary checklist you can reuse

Go through this list before you sign up and again after the first month. If several points are hard to answer honestly, cut the routine back.

• Write down in one sentence what you want from the app, such as fictional dialogue or a creative writing exercise, and check after two weeks whether that still holds.
• Pick a fixed stopping time before you open the chat, and turn off notifications you did not ask for.
• When you reach a free limit, end the session there and decide about paying the next day.
• Set a monthly spending ceiling in euros that covers both the subscription and any tokens, coins or credits.
• Note the renewal date, and whether the first-period price is different from the renewal price.
• Check your bank or credit card statement each month for the service's billing name.
• Use invented names and background details. Leave out your address, workplace, health information and other people's messages.
• Find the account deletion path and the retention period in the privacy policy before you share anything personal.
• Know where you subscribed (web, Apple or Google), because you cancel there, and uninstalling does not stop billing.
• Keep at least one regular in-person or phone contact each week that the app does not replace.
• If you feel worse after most sessions, take a full week off and see what changes.
• If the distress continues, contact your huisarts instead of relying on a chatbot.

Where to get help and which rules apply

If you are thinking about suicide, or worried about someone who is, contact 113 Zelfmoordpreventie by calling 113 or the free number 0800-0113, or use the chat at 113.nl. In an emergency where someone's life is in danger, call 112. For ongoing low mood, anxiety or loneliness, your huisarts can discuss options and refer you for further care. A companion app does not replace any of these.

As a consumer, check refund terms before you count on them. Candy.ai's terms give EU users 14 days to withdraw from an initial purchase, starting from the purchase confirmation email. Renewals are not covered, and the company can deduct a prorated amount for services already used (section 10.4.3, checked 2026-10-29). Secrets AI describes a 14-day EU/UK withdrawal with proportional treatment for used services (checked 2026-10-28). Nomi says it does not give routine refunds for unused time or dissatisfaction, though it can make discretionary exceptions (checked 2026-10-28).

Under the GDPR you can ask a provider what it holds about you and request erasure. Published contacts include [email protected], [email protected] for Candy.ai, [email protected] and [email protected] (checked 2026-10-28). Regulators elsewhere in Europe have acted against companion services. Italy's Garante fined Replika's operator EUR 5 million on 2025-04-10, partly over age verification, and the authority notes that the decision is under appeal. The same regulator fined Character.AI's operator EUR 158,000 on 2026-07-03. In the United States, the FTC opened a study of companion chatbots on 2025-09-11. That is an inquiry, not a finding. None of these decisions amounts to a ban in the Netherlands.
